James 1:9-12 Rich needs Humility, Poor needs Belief March 26, 2009

During my Uni first year, I was in a class of 30 majoring Mathematics. About 80% of the class are scholars (SAF, Police, PSC, MOE…). The brightest among us was NT, an International Olympiad medallist. However, his richness in knowledge did not translate to favor with classmates. He would pursue personal knowledge by engaging the tutor intensely without realising the whole class were staring blankly lessons after lessons not knowing what subject matters they’ve gotten into. One day, I actually had to stood up for him so as to prevent a few ’scholar’ classmates from beating him up. NT was a failure in his pursuit of riches in knowledge.

Many in EE Cluster are rich in knowledge (many scholars among us) or financially rich. May I encourage you to also take time to also grow in humility by helping those who are lowly/needy. James 1:10-11 “ 10But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.”

On the other hand, I’ve met many people who came from humble circumstance. Many of them are in bondage. They never believe that they can excel in CCA, achieve better result, represent their school, land up with a great job… They need to embrace James 1:9 “ 9The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. “

To the rich and highly, taking effort to walk with and understand the lowly is a trial. To the lowly from humble circumstances, believing and achieving great things is another form of trial. Let us take heart and receive James 1:12 without a tinge of doubt. “ 12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

James 1:1-8 Gaining Maturity through Trials March 25, 2009

I remember vividly an experience I had in my Mt. Ophir trip as a teenager. CH was a fat boy and AD looked quite fit. It was not surprising that CH got tired faster than AD. However, the later part of the climb proved otherwise. CH was positive and determined but AD was whining, grumbling and struggling.

“Why? Why? Why?”, I was reflecting.

CH came from a difficult upbringing that built up his persevering spirit but AD was fed with a silver spoon and thus cultivated a weak mind. This is why James 1:2-4 read: “ 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

AD wasted much energy by thinking “maybe I should give up and maybe I should press on” but CH was single mindedness in desiring to reach the peak. James 1:6-8 rightly say 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”

If you are facing trials of many kinds, grab this opportunity to grow towards maturity and completeness by asking God to give you Wisdom; without doubting. James 1:5 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

Just wanted to share a thanksgiving with all of you.

It was a while back when my school released my cohort’s Industrial Attachment(IA) allocation. I was unfortunately allocated to semester 1, or rather, maybe this was God’s plan. I wanted to do my IA in second semester because I would like to participate in a particular sch program but doing this program in sem 1 was impossible due to various sch commitments. In terms of work in GB, sem 2 is also more ideal. Added on to that was several minor reasons.

I quickly sms-ed quite a number of my friends asking them if any of them wanted to change. I was rejected. It was difficult to change because even more wanted sem 2 IA than sem 1. During this time, I kept praying to ask God to let me find someone that I can swop with. I’ve already done what I could have done physically. Then, there was a glimpse of hope that I thought I could change because my friend wanted to take a break from sch. My hopes went up. However he needed to get approval from the sch first, before he could swop his IA allocation with me. I was gittery as the deadline drew nearer and nearer. Prayed that the sch will approve his application so that I could take his IA slot. Deadline came, but still no news from the sch for his application.

I had gone to consult my prof on the IA and he said that I could don’t register for sem 1 IA, but that would mean I would not be allocated to sem 2 either. So i either had to bank on the sch program that I wanted to go for, or source for my own IA which would be difficult. If all else fails, I had to do industrial orientation which wasn’t what i wanted.

Since the deadline had past, I started praying and asked God, then how? Do i take the risk of not registering for sem 1 and pray that God will help me to be accepted for the sch program? Before long, i totally forgot all about my IA and hence i also forgot to pray.

Recently, a sms caught me by surprise. A pleasant surprise asking if i wanted to still change my IA if prof allows. I was on cloud nine but tried to contain the joy for the fear that my hopes would be dashed once again if prof said that it was too late to change. Called my prof after our lesson and he said that we could still change but we need to send him our details. JOY is what described my mood that day. Even when i forgot, God remembers me and my prayer.

My day ended late so by the time i got back to send him the email, my prof had probably left the office. I waited 1 day, 2 days for his email before someone mentioned that he was on leave for 10 days!!! I needed him to approve asap for fear that the letter from career office might come and this would mean i will no long be able to change my IA.

I tried checking my email several times a day hoping to receive a reply even while he was on leave. It was futile. I kept praying that the letter wouldn’t come. i satrted to doubt too. Then it dawned on me that why am i so panicky over this matter when its a blessing that God has given me? There shouldnt be any reason to. I started to claim victory over this issue by faith! It was also by God’s planning that pastor preached about doubts during the time of waiting. Some may say its by coincidence but I choose to believe this is God’s planning.

The 10 long days of waiting finally came! My IA allocation change to sem 2 has been approved! God is my answer.

We cant run or hide when God chooses to test us, but we can always turn to God in times of trial. Bless you to know that God remembers you even when you forget Him. He remembers your prayers even when you forget them. Prayer is powerful.

Scripture Reading

Guide the members to ask the Holy Spirit to teach and speak to their hearts.

OBSERVATION through Discovery Questions:

Discovering what the Bible says. The question is quite general. Therefore, regardless of whether the member is a Christian, he can still share their view freely. Don’t ‘force’ pastor’s 3-point sermon to be the central discussion.

INTERPRETATION through Understanding Questions:

The goal of understanding questions is to bring the participants to a deeper and clearer understanding of a truth. The discussion must not only lead to knowing what the Bible says, but must also lead to understanding what it means and how one fact relates to other facts.

APPLICATION through Application Questions:

Considering how these facts apply to my life.

APPLY using BICEPS:

Applying is not restricted to ‘do something’. In fact, there are 6 types of application:

a.    Belief to embrace

b.    Items for prayer

c.    Commands to obey

d.   Examples to follow

e.    Promises to claim

f.     Sins to avoid

Questioning Method:

Ask questions to lead into discussion. Whether it is a discovery, understanding or application question, the Leader should use the launch-guide-summarize method.

a.    Launch – getting the group started in sharing or answering. Therefore the facilitator must start with a prepared question

b.    Guideguide other members to discuss the same issue/question.

c.    Summarize – a brief review of the main discussion points before transiting into the next question/issue/section.

What is the BASIS of our influence?

INTEGRITY of our Personal Life

2 Tim 2:15 – Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Fundamental in Achieving Excellent Dependability within the Leadership

Focus on the Personal Interest of EACH INDIVIDUAL & on the IMPROVEMENT of their LIFESTYLES!!! — Ps Cesar Castellanos

Why do we meet for CELL every week?

To MOTIVATE, MINISTER, & to KEEP ourselves in FAITH; NOT to deal with administrative issues!!! — Ps Cesar Castellanos

Word – Hear from God

It is in the Word Time that we can achieve this: “To MOTIVATE, MINISTER, &  to keep the members in FAITH”

Hence, WORD TIME is the most CRITICAL in our Cell Meetings!

Dear EE Teens,

As we enter into the Love Your Neighbour year, I was reminded of my secondary school days; from terror to saint. The key is to allow God to first transform our lives before we can transform our classrooms.

It starts with a simple prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I commit my attitude in my school to you. I say ‘No’ to vulgarity, gambling, offensive words, rudeness, etc. I decide to put on a new self of gentleness, helpfulness, positive words and joy.

May you Love your Teachers and Classmates!terror

My Hope Singapore Sharing By Lijun December 13, 2008

I am glad to see unity in the body of Christ as we prepare for My Hope Singapore. We had taken time to meet after Youth Service to plan, pray and to rehearse on the eve of My Hope. I’m most glad to see the younger ones, those in Secondary schools, take up ownership of the event by opening up the house for My Hope, inviting people and leading in games and sharing of testimony and others.

I’m thankful that Holy Spirit has spoken to the people in the event through the powerful testimony of Kelvin Soh and the powerful preaching by Dr Billy Graham. Praise God, there were three salvations and one of my guests, though did not receive Christ, is interested to know more about Christianity. I am arranging to meet her in church this Sunday.

Thank You Jesus for everything!

Regards,
Lijun
