The Living Word October 7, 2007

Yesterday, my friend was saying over msn: “sometimes i wonder… is it true when ppl say, being kind doesn’t pay..”
Remembering Ps Khong’s sermon, I responded, “this world is unfair and this is not denied in the bible, but God is good”
Well, I wasn’t very sure where in God’s word talk about that. Today, Ps Eugene was sharing that the Holy Spirit taught English… then I was following through Isaiah… to my surprise…
Isaiah 49:4
But I said, “I have labored to no purpose;
I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing.
Yet what is due me is in the LORD’s hand,
and my reward is with my God.”
The verse spoke exactly how my friend felt and the hope in God that I was directing her to. God will teach us His living word for our lives *and* also the lives of those around us
Come, lets tune in together on the OT Reading Schedule. (psst… btw, Isaiah 40 – 66 talks lots about the Messianic prophecies @ Jesus Christ, so look out for the Lord

Who wouldn’t want to enter into rest? October 3, 2007

Ps Julie during the YN Leaders’ meeting talked about the Year of Sabbath 2008. One verse that caught my attention was Hebrews 4:9-11 (emphasis mine):
There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.
I was thinking at the back of my mind, “who wouldn’t want to enter into God’s rest?” In light of the context in Hebrews 3 and 4, the writer was talking about the defiance of the Israelites not obeying God and therefore not enter into His rest. Applied in our context today, it would mean that there will also be some people who will not enter into God’s rest for the same reasons that prevented the Israelites from entering His rest.
I gather that lacking trust in God would prevent someone from entering into Sabbath. To observe Sabbath means one takes a break from the routine. During the wondering years in the desert, the Israelites were commanded to collect twice the amount of manna on the sixth day to prepare for the Sabbath. Those who did not obey (trust) God would not have collected enough on the sixth day, go out and find nothing on Sunday, and go hungry.
Entering into Sabbath brings about a certain amount of uncertainty. It’s easier to stick to the routine to avoid all uncertainty than to break it. Will I “make every effort” to surrender that uncertainty to God and rest in Him?
Discovering God’s Call in our Life September 6, 2007

Aargh!!! What does God want me to do??
Sounds familiar?? Well I guess many of us have encountered this questions somewhere in our lives and some of us still do.
I remembered last week when I went for cell and we listened to Pastor Benny Ho’s sermon on ‘Why in the world do we work?’, what struck me is the Principle of Living Life as a guideline to discover our calling.
The Principle is like this..Live life first, and as we live life, stuff happens-good and bad. Events begin to accumulate. Enough events will happen till it pushes us to realize that things cannot remain as it is. This will lead us to make some decisions which will cause us to listen to God. If there is a correct response from the listening, it is A CALL, a moving to the next thing. If we don’t respond correctly…then then then….God in His grace will allow us to detour, more events will happen & pushes us to another listening point.
And how to recognize God’s call? Our soul is awaken, we found a sense of rightness. We feel God’s pleasure even though circumstances might not get better.
I don’t think this is a hard and fast rule that the only way to discover calling is like that. It is a guideline or encouragement to those in search for God’s calling or still waiting. Well I believe it’s quite true for my life. Continue to live the life that God has paved out for you. But I wish to add more listening points in my life so as not to get ’sucked’ into the wrong way of doing things which will lead me to more detours in my life! Remember…Re-tune to God’s voice (Sun’s sermon)

2 Obstacles in Evangelism July 9, 2007

Ps Ed Silvoso mentioned, in context of “The Redemptive Role of Wealth”, about 2 misconceptions:
1) Success is something Christians cannot handle well
2) The Church, although perhaps unintentionally, teaches, or at least implies, that God despises rich people.
I also feel that these 2 misconceptions also serve to hinder us from believing that Jesus is the BEST thing for our friends. Some of us walk around with the mindset that:
“If my friend accept Christ, he cannot be so rich.”
“If my friend accept Christ, he cannot be too high up in the corporate ladder.”
No wonder some of us have difficulty in reaching out and evangelising.
May the Spirit of God convict you to the point where you can say to your friend:
“Jesus is the best thing for you, He will help you become successful, He will bless you abundantly!!!”
Victim of other’s mistake June 27, 2007

That phrase that SP mentioned during sermon caught me. SP shared about how sometimes as a follower, you may be at times be a victim of other’s mistake. Well, I am thankful for my 12 spiritual sons for believing in a Sovereign God! Because of their belief, it has provided a “family” environment, even for me to grow, even for me to make mistakes. Now, of course, the mistakes I have made (and used in this context) are not “sin” issues, but sometimes bother around the grey areas, like whether to serve in this ministry or not.
Through that, I have learnt another value of a TRUE Spiritual Child – whether he or she is willing to allow me to make mistakes while discipling.
Reflections on Shield of Faith April 17, 2007

By Wei Lit (Jhee 12)
The sermon on the Shield of Faith had me thinking somewhat about what faith actually means to myself, as well as to other
Christians, especially those who had known the Lord for some time, chronologically.
Why did I choose to use the term “chronologically”? Well, I believe that most of us would agree with me, that just because one has been a Christian for a long time, does not mean that one knows the Lord well. These two are simply not necessarily related.
A little background. I was having dinner at Joanna Ong’s home, with Jo herself, and Alex Tai and Steph Ong. Later, Aeriel New and Wang Ying joined in the conversation, which soon centred around Pastor Khong’ sermon on faith.
Some of us were having a dry time in our spiritual lives, so we talked about how faith could actually be built, in a time when there isn’t much to begin with. Then we were wondering, how do pre-believers actually come about to summon up their faith, when they don’t even “know” the Lord. Steph brought up a very important point. “Desperation”.
That got me thinking. For us leaders, we have probably had friends, or members, who were once hot for the Lord. But so strangely, despite the fact that they seemed to know Him, when troubles come, they give up. Just like what Jesus said in the parables of the seeds, those who receive the word at once with joy, yet has no root, will quickly fall away, come troubles or
persecution because of the word.
Is it so hard for us to trust the Lord, when times get tough? Seems absurd that hard times and difficult situations drive pre-believers into the arms of our Saviour, yet drive Christians away! The grace of God is so abounding. And sadly, people reject it.
Yes, there are many things out of our control. We don’t always get the grades we want. We don’t always get the pay we like. We may not even get the girlfriend or boyfriend that we are crazy over. But do we trust God’s goodness? Do we trust His power? Do we even believe that He is Lord? Basically, do we have strong and healthy roots?
Joshua said “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” What about you?

I’ve been pondering on Ps Melvin’s message on 1 Apr on Sowing and Reaping had some insights into this topic. This is one of them….
SOWING is a SACRIFICE
Usually when the farmers sow their seeds, they will always use their BEST seeds to sow because they want to be able to reap the BEST crop the next harvest time. This will mean that they have to sacrifice the best of their crop. Are we sowing the best for GOD? I have come to realize that as soon as we allow the things we hold on to die, it will bear much more fruit. Just like a seed that we have to let go from our hand to land on the soil and let it die so it can bear fruit.
Is there something you need to let go to let God take over? John 12:24
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
GIVE GOD YOUR BEST!
Is God’s love really UN-conditional? March 17, 2007

Lately, my love for my spiritual child has been challenged. My wife said to love the child unconditionally. And I started to ponder what really is unconditional love?
Is God’s love unconditional? Yes!
Before you asked for it, before anyone of us did anything, He already choose to die for us. Yes, it was already done – unconditionally. Because of His love, He already gave His one and only Son.
John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.“
But RECEIVING His love is different. You must BELIEVE in Him.
I can extend out my hands with a present, nicely wrapped, but you must take it from my hand to receive it. If not, I will be forcing it to you.
May you receive His love!!!
