Often we say, do not judge a book by its cover. But how often do we really walk the talk?

I must admit, what I saw really blew me away. I thought it was going to be something ”wierd” since my roommate asked me to go watch it out of the blue.

Let the following video serve as a reminder.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

You can skip the first 30s or so if you wish.

Blessing the Community through Carols and Words of Encouragement December 29, 2007

Some of us carol @ the hospital that I was working in during the Christmas period. We partnered with a group of Cantonese speaking adults from Covenant Evangelical Free Church. We visited 2 big wards where we sang to patients w cancer, stroke and kidney problems. We laid hands and prayed for some of them e.g. health and finances.

 NUH Caroling

Although we could not share the Gospel in explicit ways, as the hospital is not a Christian organisation, thanks be to God for the opportunity to give out Christian tracts and the open doors to share Christ’s love in practical ways. A Malay patient even requested for us to sing ‘Jingle Bells’! I’m glad that we brought tidings of joy and hope to those who were hospitalised as well as to their carers.

 Some thoughts-

1) The more elderly Cantonese-speaking aunties and uncles really impressed me! Their genuine concern was expressed so naturally in their contact with the patients. They were generous with their words of encouragement and spontaneous with their offers to pray. Some of them were older than my parents yet their energy to serve the Lord is strong perhaps stronger than most young people.

 2) As healthcare providers, we have not really been meeting the spiritual needs of the patients….Is this a problem of the system?  We are a secular organisation hence we are not to speak about God so explicitly. Western medicine is the cure, the prevention not the spiritual laws. Not totally true. Diseases often have spiritual roots and implications. I pray that God will equip me with the skills and the sensitivity to minister to the spiritual needs of my patients in an acceptable way just as I have provided them with my professional help.  We are pastors in the marketplace! Indeed Ed Silvoso has shared that nation transformation has to start from the marketplace. Before marketplace can be transformed, there need to be transformation of the individual self. May the Christians rise up in healthcare and put on the mind of Christ and see ourselves as influential for the Lord.

3) I thank God that He has gel the brothers and sisters from EE cluster to serve that day. In the same way His love has prompted us to serve along side with the Cantonese-speaking group from another church.  All Glory to the Lord!

Hey cluster!

We are in the FINALS! Singapore plays Malaysia on Saturday, 15th December at 4.30pm Thailand time, 5.30pm Singapore time. (http://www.teamsingapore.com.sg/publish/content/teamsingapore/en/games/sea/2007/thailand_2007/schedule.detail.html?sportFilter=106)

UPDATES:
Singapore beat the Philippines 10.5-1 yesterday. And Pastor Khong was chosen to be the “No. 1″! (http://www.equestrian.com.my/news/2007/12/13/3081,ce6,3cab97.html) Don’t know what that means in polo but I guess it must be good? Hahaz!

Now the Malaysian team are undeniably strong, so Pastor Khong and his team need all the support they can get. Angelic help. So people, let’s do it!

In His Service,
Philip. =D

Hey cluster!

Remember we voted enthusiastically for Pastor Khong for the SEA Games’ Sports Idol? Well he is in the FINAL ROUND which goes on from now until 21 December 2007, which means he is Singapore’s top 50 Sports Idols!

And he needs our votes! I think we can vote more than once (I know many of us did) so let’s help him out in this year of victory! Check out http://www.teamsingapore.com.sg/publish/teamsingapore/sportsidol/phase2/cat/lawrence_khong_kin.html and vote for our beloved pastor!

Also, he needs our prayers! Singapore has defeated Thailand 7-5 for Polo on 8 December (Saturday) and also beat Indonesia 8-3 on 9 December (Sunday). Just as the strategy went, Singapore lost to Malaysia 2.5-8 yesterday, 11 December (Tuesday). THE LAST MATCH FOR THE PRELIMINARY ROUND IS TOMORROW, 13 December (Thursday) where Singapore will play the Philippines at 4.30pm Thailand time. Let’s see Pastor Khong into the FINALS! Malaysia is in the finals after beating Indonesia 11-3.5, the Philippines 11-1.5 and Thailand 14-3.5. Courtesy of http://www.equestrian.com.my:

Malaysia: 4 wins: 8 points
Singapore: 2 wins, 1 loss: 4 points
Thailand: 1 win, 2 losses: 2 points
Philippines: 1 win, 2 losses: 2 points
Indonesia: 3 losses: 0 points.

Singapore needs only a draw to secure their place in the final; whereas apparently because of goal difference the Philippines has a glimer of hope if they thrash Singapore soundly on the Thursday match. According to http://www.equestrian.com.my/blog/polo/?cat=2 (a blog by a Singapore polo player, I think he’s Peter J. Abishenagaden) the Philippines needs to win with a score difference of 15 to edge Singapore out of the finals.

In the light of this, let us remember 15 December (Saturday), which is the FINALS for Men’s Polo. 4.30pm.

Let’s end off the year of victory with a bang!

Philip. =]

Food for thought… October 16, 2007

Food for thought:

Lee Kuan Yew: Rule of law important for investors and economic growth

SINGAPORE, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Singapore founding father Lee Kuan Yew emphasized on Sunday the importance of the rule of law for investors and for economic growth.
Speaking at the International Bar Association’s conference, Minister Mentor Lee said: “Important for investors and economic growth is the rule of law, implemented through an independent judiciary, an honest and efficient police force, and effective law enforcement agencies.”

According to local television Channel News Asia report, he also listed some key attributes such as good governance and a sound judicial system that have resulted in stability and economic growth for Singapore.

Addressing some 3,500 lawyers and participants from around the world, Lee also cited three factors which enabled the country to escape the poverty that had plagued the region.
“First, clean and efficient government, second, the character and capabilities of the leadership in charge, third, an industrious people, eager and quick to learn to be productive and gainfully employed,” he said.

Drawing parallels…

Pastor Peter Tsukahira: Rule of law important for Kingdom-investors and Kingdom-growth

3 factors which enabled a church to escape from spiritual poverty:

a. Establishment of reliable government of 12
b. Character and skill-sets of G12 & cell leaders
c. Diligent and enthusiastic followers of God, staying free from sins to gain abundant and fruitful lives

Incidentally, LKY was sharing on Sunday too.

Cheers.

The Case for Faith October 2, 2007

My spiritual father was reading this book “The Case of Faith” by Lee Strobel (2000, Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan) some time ago and he was sharing with us about the book. I saw the book on sale at Popular Toa Payoh on Sunday and bought it for $12.84. I am now halfway through the book as I write this entry; this book brings a much-needed refreshing and reinvigorating spirit to my soul. I’ll like to share this book not so much as a book review, but to share my enthusiasm why this book is a good collection to your library.

Strobel in this book writes about what he calls “The Big Eight”: 8 biggest emotional barriers to faith. Trained in law and journalism, his style of writing is direct and comprehensive. His questions are what hard-nosed atheist will ask (he being a strong atheist himself before knowing Jesus). He writes not out of his own qualifications, but he brings us through the questions using interviews with some of today’s most respected apologists. This book’s modern treatment of how the age-old barriers to faith can be knocked down one by one through systematic, critical and logical thinking combined with evidence inside and outside the Bible–and with the help of the Holy Spirit–is an exciting read to say the least. This book can certainly convince the little skeptic inside all of us. For the bigger skeptics, it serves as a springboard for further investigation of the truth.

For Christians, read this book to strengthen your faith. It certainly answered some of my own questions about God, Jesus, the Bible and Christianity. Recommend this book for your God-seeking friends if they are the kind who like intellectual debates. Having said that, I pray that whoever reads this book will read it in the right spirit–it is not meant as a weapon to knock down the critics of Christianity but to answer nagging questions some of us find it hard to answer without help.

It’s not a lack of evidence that turn people from God…love never works coercively. It only works persuasively. (p198, The Case for Faith)

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV)

PS: A journalist bringing glory to God…shouldn’t we aspire to glorify God through our own roles in this world too? :)

Serving the SM2 October 2, 2007

Hi all,
I would like to thank God for my SM2.

I saw changes and transformation in some of the SM2. It’s amazed me by their changes and growth.

After the camp, I can see the bonding within my group grow.  I was very surprised coz I felt hard to engage with them. Initially, I do think whether it’s the right platform for me. But to my surprise, they started to open and care for each other through time. They even initiated an outing (I found it rare to have initiated an outing) and it happened to be an upcoming of Pearlyn’s birthday so they planned and threw a party for her. They went extra miles to contact Kelvin (Pearlyn’s boyfriend) and plan for a surprise outing. They even went out to recee the place before the outing. We went for steamboat, we had so much fun.

Beside that, they made a video appreciation to our group’s befriender and also gifts. It touched my heart because when I served, I never think for return but God blessed me back through them.Initially I was quite discourage while serving them, I found it hard to engage with them (although still feel the same till now) but God is so good that He bless me back despite of my discouragement and He even encouraged me through them. I felt a little guilty whether I have served enough for Him and the SM2.

Through this experience, God once again taught me that while I served Him, He will bless me back much, much more and His blessing sometimes came in unexpected way and time. And I can always learn something out of it.

I hope that this will bless all of you who are discouraged when serving God. Press on because God surely will bless… in areas that you may not expected. =)

Hugs,

JD
