Victim of other’s mistake June 27, 2007

That phrase that SP mentioned during sermon caught me. SP shared about how sometimes as a follower, you may be at times be a victim of other’s mistake. Well, I am thankful for my 12 spiritual sons for believing in a Sovereign God! Because of their belief, it has provided a “family” environment, even for me to grow, even for me to make mistakes. Now, of course, the mistakes I have made (and used in this context) are not “sin” issues, but sometimes bother around the grey areas, like whether to serve in this ministry or not.

Through that, I have learnt another value of a TRUE Spiritual Child – whether he or she is willing to allow me to make mistakes while discipling.

From Wei Lit (Jhee12)

Last night, I got to my block, when I saw an old couple, doing karang guni work. It had just stopped raining and their boxes that they collected had been blown away and drenched in water.I was looking at the boxes. Remembering what we were planning to do, to bless people this coming July for the 100K Campaign, I stopped. I was thinking – ” surely they don’t need my help? Why not just go back to the house, and rest? After all, I had just gone for a 45 minute run and I am tired.”
But I chose not to go up. I was convicted, that though no one would see me do a good deed, I would offer my help. Even if my help was rejected, I would offer it anyway.
Surely enough, the old lady told me that there is no need to help. From what I could understand from her in Chinese, she was telling me that there was no need to help, and that it was raining and I need not bother.
In the end, I felt that at the very least, I know that I am not a hypocrite. I was now more confident in going thru’ the 100K Campaign. No one may now accuse me of being a “seasonal” blessing, who will only do things because of a special event.
I challenge our people therefore. Don’t wait till July! ” In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. ” – Matthew 5:16

Trust – Empower – Ownership June 7, 2007

This YN144 retreat is one of the best retreats I’ve ever been.

Not only it was a relaxing time but I learnt a powerful leadership lesson.

On the third day, the groups had to build a sand castle together. I was in Ps William’s group. Although he had done this activity several times, he trusted the group to come up with the design. During the building process, with a little technical guidance, he allowed us to build the sandcastle our own way. We all could sense the trust that he has on us. The members began to take ownership and build gardens, coliseum, football field, canons, beautify the walls… there was no one idling. We took pride in every portion we built. At the end we were proud of it.

Then, I remembered Ps Julie’s sharing, Trusting Others will Empower Them. I truly understand this principle during this activity. I felt empowerment when I was trusted with the task of designing the castle. I believed the rest of the members felt the empowerment too when they were given the free play to construct and beautify our sandcastle. I would like to take the sharing even further that:

Trust NOT only Empowers but it gives Ownership.

It was a simple truth coming alive during the activity.

Unity with God in waiting June 6, 2007

During the YN288 Re-encounter, the message that tugged most at my heart came from the sharing about the 1st temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4. In that first temptation, the devil told Jesus to turn the stones into bread. Pastor Julie shared that the focus of this temptation is not about Jesus proving that he had the power to work miracles. It’s not even about the bread. The focus is about getting bread NOW! It’s about instant gratification.

Jesus could have fed his hunger immediately but he chose instead to remember why he was in the desert – to wait upon God through fasting.

I realised that my nature is of a person who very much desires instant gratification. If I need something, I will go out immediately to buy it at the nearest convenient place, bring it back, and put it to use immediately. If there is something nagging at the back of my mind, I will take immediate steps to deal with the issue and implement and action plan. If there is something that needs to be communicated, I craft my email and send it off immediately. I very much try to go from problem to solution in 10 seconds flat.

Recently, I have been going through some situations which I find are beyond my ability to control, and the lack of a solution or even a direction has been particularly vexing to me. I sense that God is telling me to wait, and that is the most difficult thing for me – to wait. That is why this message spoke so deeply to my heart.

I sensed that God was tugging at my heart to remind me of returning to waiting on him. That my desire for instant solutions was also preventing me from trusting in the Lord and depending on him. Instead, I need to seek the Lord and await the solutions that come from God’s time, because those are the best solutions of all. In the book of Samuel, King David inquired of God before he made his decisions. In Samuel 23, he inquired of God twice and God assured him of victory, giving him success and confidence.

I know that when I move in God’s path, I can be confident of success. I know if God is telling me to wait, then He is waiting along with me. I want to be a man patient enough to inquire of God and await His word.
