I don’t like you Daddy… March 31, 2007

One of the most hurting words a father could hear from his daughter…
Those were the words from Gabby’s mouth today as I was driving in the car. It was just me and my daughters. My wife was not around to intervene. The following was the conversation I had with Gabby.

G: I dont like you Daddy (It was initiated by her)
J: Why?
G: I dont like you Daddy
J: Do you love Daddy?
G: No
J: Why?
G: Because you scold me
J: When did Daddy scold you?
And she recounted something that happened 2 days ago!!!
Then Gabby changes subject and talks about something else.
I managed to bring her back to the topic and we had a TREMENDOUSLY honest talk…..
I believe healing was done…:)

Lessons learnt:
1) Children DO remember things.
2) Healing of relationship was possible because she started to open up her feelings towards me. It is difficult to resolve things between father and daughter if both dont know how each other is feeling.
3) Learn to discern the right time to engage my daughter. I am glad I had the chance to have a good talk with her in the car. This has never happened before. Of course Gena was there, but she could not understand anything.

I thank God for those skills and things that I learn through many years of ministry, it really helps me understand people and better relate to my loved ones.
Today, was the best father-daughter talk I had in my life so far!!! :)

Choir Service starts this Sunday March 30, 2007

It’s our cluster turn to serve in the church choir in April!! I am privileged to be part of the choir that will be singing this Sunday. Even as I turned up for rehearsal just this evening at TCT, I can’t help but notice that our cluster choir for this sun is quite different from the usual mix. Firstly there are only 9 gals out of the 43 singers. That’s 20%. No worries. The female vocals will still be strong ;) Secondly, most of the singers are secondary or JC schoolboys.

The choir mistress, Crystal has reminded us our roles as the choir. One of which is being an example  or visual reminder to the congregation of how we are to praise and worship the Lord. The choir is NOT a human backdrop. This also brought to mind this verse from 1 Chronicles 15:27

Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the singers, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs.

Singers held responsible roles in temple worship even dressing the same as the king and the priests (although we will be donning colourful polo tees). Just a word of encouragement to the secondary and JC students who are singing this Sunday- Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in praise and worship this Sunday! You willl be the Levites on the worship platform!

sun_002.JPGInspired by Ps Ceasar’s sharing Making Specific Prayers,

On Tuesday, during the cell group meeting, we made our list of specific prayer requests and started to pray to the items.

I made a list of 12 items.

On item 8, I wrote that I wanted God to provide someone to coach me in my singing, FOR FREE. When I wrote it, I thought this must be one of the craziest request in my list that really need God to answer.

Today, one of my customer walked in to pick up her medications and we had a long conversation to sort out her dosages and all. I have no idea how it went into the topic but she mentioned that she sings professionally and coaches too. Of course I siezed the opportunity and ask her some questions on singing techniques. She was very helpful and gave me some tips. Although it was just 5-10mins of teaching, but I GOT MY FREE SINGING LESSON!!! Just 2 days after praying.

God is AWESOME!

I know this is the first sign that God is showing me that he hears our prayers and more importantly, He is ready to answer if ONLY we pray.

A changed life changes lives! March 29, 2007

G12 – the government of 12. 12 warriors of light, 12 disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, 12 spiritual children.

As I attended G12 conference for the 6th time, I find myself grasping the core of G12. To me, I sum it up as “transformation”! It is very simple. It is about us being won, being consolidated, being discipled first ourselves, before being sent out to win.

When I heard about how Pastor Claudia could share powerfully on the Word of God and teach her 12 to walk right with God, I told God in my heart that I want that. I realise that G12 is not about others, but ourselves too. It is about allowing God to transform our lives and with it, gives us the authority and freedom to partner the Holy Spirit to transform the lives of others.

We! We need to take the first step! We need to breakout. We need to go deep. We need to look far. We need to ask big. I find that more and more, G12 looks into our life. Is our life changed to be more like Jesus?

If we want to win and impact lives, our life must be impacted through ongoing personal encounters with our beloved Saviour, for Phi 2:12-13 teaches us to “continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

I am convicted to be serious in my devotion with God. I do not want to give to God my leftovers. I want to give Him my best – my best time of the day! Even as I walk right and close with God, the assurance is that my leadership, my ministry and my life will be empowered by the Holy Spirit. When this happens, it is no longer me who speaks, but the Spirit of God that lives in me. I can then speak with authority when I teach the word of God or when I reach out to others.

Meet the Next Generation March 29, 2007

1] They use technology and the internet to connect with people in new and distinctive ways. Text messaging, instant messaging and email keep them in constant contact with friends. About half say they sent or received a text message over the phone in the past day, approximately double the proportion of those ages 26-40.

2] They are the “Look at Me” generation. Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and MyYearbook allow individuals to post a personal profile complete with photos and descriptions of interests and hobbies. A majority of Gen Nexters have used one of these social networking sites, and more than four-in-ten have created a personal profile.

3] Their embrace of new technology has made them uniquely aware of its advantages and disadvantages. They are more likely than older adults to say these cyber-tools make it easier for them to make new friends and help them to stay close to old friends and family. But more than eight-in-ten also acknowledge that these tools “make people lazier.”

4] About half of Gen Nexters say the growing number of immigrants to the U.S. strengthens the country more than any generation. And they also lead the way in their support for gay marriage and acceptance of interracial dating.

5] Beyond these social issues, their views defy easy categorization. For example, Generation Next is less critical of government regulation of business but also less critical of business itself. And they are the most likely of any generation to support privatization of the Social Security system.

6] They maintain close contact with parents and family. Roughly eight-in-ten say they talked to their parents in the past day. Nearly three-in-four see their parents at least once a week, and half say they see their parents daily. One reason: money. About three-quarters of Gen Nexters say their parents have helped them financially in the past year.

7] Their parents may not always be pleased by what they see on those visits home: About half of Gen Nexters say they have either gotten a tattoo, dyed their hair an untraditional color, or had a body piercing in a place other than their ear lobe. The most popular are tattoos, which decorate the bodies of more than a third of these young adults.

8] One-in-five members of Generation Next say they have no religious affiliation or are atheist or agnostic, nearly double the proportion of young people who said that in the late 1980s. And just 4% of Gen Nexters say people in their generation view becoming more spiritual as their most important goal in life.

9] They are somewhat more interested in keeping up with politics and national affairs than were young people a generation ago. Still, only a third say they follow what’s going on in government and public affairs “most of the time.”

10] In Pew surveys in 2006, nearly half of young people (48%) identified more with the Democratic Party, while just 35% affiliated more with the GOP. This makes Generation Next the least Republican generation.

11] Voter turnout among young people increased significantly between 2000 and 2004, interrupting a decades-long decline in turnout among the young. Nonetheless, most members of Generation Next feel removed from the political process. Only about four-in-ten agree with the statement: “It’s my duty as a citizen to always vote.”

12] They are significantly less cynical about government and political leaders than are other Americans or the previous generation of young people. A majority of Americans agree with the statement: “When something is run by the government, it is usually inefficient and wasteful,” but most Generation Nexters reject this idea.

13] Their heroes are close and familiar. When asked to name someone they admire, they are twice as likely as older Americans to name a family member, teacher, or mentor. Moreover, roughly twice as many young people say they most admire an entertainer rather than a political leader.

14] They are more comfortable with globalization and new ways of doing work. They are the most likely of any age group to say that automation, the outsourcing of jobs, and the growing number of immigrants have helped and not hurt American workers.

15] Asked about the life goals of those in their age group, most Gen Nexters say their generation’s top goals are fortune and fame. Roughly eight-in-ten say people in their generation think getting rich is either the most important, or second most important, goal in their lives. About half say that becoming famous also is valued highly by fellow Gen Nexters.

 Lushan

A well-quoted verse by Song Dynasty poet Su Shi 苏轼 aptly describes the numerous façade of this renowned mountain.  Standing at 1474 meters, Mt Lushan, a famous scenic area and summer resort in the north of Jiangxi Province, China, is not only well known for its beautiful scenery with sheer peaks, clouds and fogs, and deep valleys, but also a historical, cultural, political & religious mountain.  Reputed as “the Kingdom of Prose & Mountain of Poetry”, Mt Lushan’s long history has inspired many prominent painters & writers to write prose, poetry (some 4000 verses), painting & calligraphic work about its beauty.

Amazingly, this historical mountain is one of the spiritual centers of the Chinese civilization. Catholic & Christian churches and Islamic mosques can be found together with Buddhist and Taoist temples in this place.

Lushan-church

In the early 19th Century, an English missionary Edward Selby Little found Mt Lushan to be an ideal place to build villas for summer resorts. He established a company to take charge of overall planning & construction. By 1927, 560 villas were built attracting thousands of foreigners here to escape from the hot Chinese Summer. In addition he built churches, schools, hospitals & recreational facilities around these villas. A true 19th century market place minister, isn’t he?

One of the most famous is Meilu Villa of Chiang Kai-shek & Soong Mei Ling. The villa was a gift from one of Mdm Soong’s friend, an English woman missionary, Jane Barlee.

During the period of the People’s Republic, Lushan was the summer capital of Chiang. Not only he held many meetings here, it was a training center for his military, party & government officials.

In 1937, Zhou Enlai, on behalf of Chinese Communist Party came to Mt Lushan to hold a conference with Chiang. After the People’s Republic of China was founded, Chairman Mao Zedong often spend his summer in Lushan. He held 3 important conferences of the Central committee of the Chinese Communist Party here.

Did I stir your interest to know more about Mt Lushan? If yes, you can get more information from the following website

The above poem is very beautiful.
To help some of us better appreciate it, below is my own literal translation & interpretation:

Literal Translation
Viewing at the horizon are the mountain ridge
Yet from the side one sees the peak
Looking from far & near, the mountain appear in high & low
I cannot know the true Lushan, as I am is in the midst of it

Interpreted meaning
Differing conclusion comes from the various perspectives a person sees a situation.
If one is in the thick of a situation, can he really see the truth?

Another famous poem of Lushan

Literal Translation

April comes, the fragrance gone
Mountain temple peach blossom begin to bloom
Lamenting that Spring has gone away
Unknowingly it returns to here instead

Want to know more about me? Very easy. Google my full name and you get the following, within 2 pages of Google Search:

1) Occupation, Email address & Office Phone Number
CRuSH

2) That I completed my MBA in NUS and which year
MBA

3) Pastor of YouthNet FCBC and former employment in Chemical Sales
Job

That is why I am such a transparent person… no point hiding….hahaha :)

For common names like our other Cluster Pastors, it generates MANY pages of Google Search, which I did not bother to go look at everyone of them.

Interesting Observation: when I Google Serene, within the first 4 Google Search item, I stumbled upon someone in our Cluster 12. Guess who? :)

Worship in Revelations March 26, 2007

by Kenny G (Rennie’s cell, also in my worship band)

Revelation is not only a “doomsday” book, but it also offers an insight into what worship is like in heaven, and will be like in the future. In Revelation 4, John is brought up into the presence of God in heaven, and what he sees is nothing short of God’s powerful majesty, splendor, and glory. In particular, he sees the multitudes worshiping God, and we are given the exact words sung. Here are two examples:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Rev 5:12)

“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” (Rev 7:12)

There is one particular pattern to these, and all the other songs in Revelation; that is, the lack of the word “I”. There is no reference to the self, not even phrases resembling “thank You for what You have done for me”, nor “I will praise you with my lips”. Everything is about God in worship, because faced with His overwhelming presence, all you can do is to give Him praise and worship.

We won’t see a lot of songs we sing now, whether in service or cell group, in heaven. Take, for example, United Live’s “Take it All”:

“Jesus we’re living for Your name, never be ashamed of You. Our praise, and all we are today, take take take it all”

In that one line, the self is referred to three times (“we”, “our”, “we”) – as many times as Jesus (Jesus, Your, You)! The same goes not only for contemporary songs, but also for hymns, like “Be Thou MY Vision”.

The songs we sing therefore deviates from the Revelation model quite abit – while worship in Revelation points to God, the songs we sing often point God to us – there is the danger of having self take precedence over God. While such songs often enable us to express our feelings of love & gratitude to God, and thus have a role to play in worship (after all, my favourite song is “Just Let Me Say”, a love song to God), we must always remember that it is all about God, that songs that describe His undilluted (from thinking about oneself) presence, majesty, glory, splendor, power, etc. When worshipping, think of Revelation 4-7!

Hope, Believe, Know March 24, 2007

I would like to share why students do so differently for their examinations.

Some students go into the exam hall hoping that they might do well.
Some students go into the exam hall believing that they will do well.
Other students go into the exam hall knowing that they will do well.

That is what causes the big difference in the grades and how they perform. Confidence.

Well, firstly do you hope that God would bless you? (oh dear Lord, if You would please bless me)
Secondly, do you believe that God would bless you? (oh dear Lord, if you can, bless me)
Thirdly, do you know it deep down in your heart that God would bless you? (oh dear Lord, I know that you would, can and WILL bless me)

Yes, I believe all of us hope that God would bless us, most of us do believe that God would bless us. But do we know deep down that God really really wants to bless us, and we do not have to be afraid when asking God or praying for something. Be confident in our Lord.

Matthew 7:7-11

Ask, Seek, Knock
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

HBK – progress of hoping, to believing, to knowing each time you pray God definitely answers.
