Order your life February 23, 2007

“When God enters your life, there is order” – remarks by one of my 12 during his devotion time with God. He mentioned how when God freed the Israelites out of Egypt, He brought order into the community, by laying down some laws, rules and way of living etc.
And in this season of Chinese New Year, where families are also busy cleaning up the house, putting things in order, I pondered about whether my life was in order. How many times were we caught up in the urgent rather than in the important?!?!?
Go deep in the Word and get your life in order! That is the mark of God entering our lives!

An ad guy was having a conversation with God. Let’s call him Al Ries.
Al: Working on a creative today, God. Can’t seem to juice out any substantive ideas.
God: Creativity? That’s my forte.
Al: Really?
God: Well, how about me creating something out of nothing, my spontaneity in Genesis 1?
Al: Ah well, I did think of something, but I don’t think they will amount to anything.
God: Well, not really. I can see that you have a couple of good ideas. Take a look and see if you can bring these ideas together. I gathered the waters to form the seas isn’t it? The couple of ideas you now have, may just amount to something when brought together.
Al: Way cool! Creativity is really your forte huh. By the way, any tips for a good ad?
God: Hmm, perhaps you may want to set out creating something memorable. For instance, to epitomize my mercy in Genesis 9, I painted the sky with a rainbow.
Al: Well right, that’s certainly memorable. It sure helped me to remember the story of the flood much better, at least in Sunday School.
God: Think about creating something surprising as well. We all like surprises. Sometimes, my people surprise me with their deep adoration for me.
Al: Talking about surprises, I can’t help but remember how you surprised Balaam with the talking donkey in Numbers 22. I liked the story so much that I read it twice!
God: That was a long time ago, Al, but you must agree that it was a good one isn’t it? Make sure your ad is visually pleasing and captivating as well. Think of how the Tabernacle in Exodus 26 was such a visual representation of myself.
Al: Gee thanks, I’ll bear these tips in mind.
God: Remember, I am not only the God@Church but God@Marketplace as well.
Come Build an Altar with your Life! February 16, 2007

Genesis 3:15, 22:13
There is a perfect sacrifice placed on an altar by a perfect priest.
Jesus is the perfect sacrifice
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.
Jesus is the perfect priest
He was more than a priest. he was the great high priest.
Hebrews 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
Jesus willing built the altar
1 John 10:17-18 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”
Building a physical altar is not difficult but willing laying your life at the altar is. The main reason is that the sacrifice is a living one. The living one has a choice. So when given a choice, most people choose to come down from the altar. But Jesus’ attitude is ‘not my will but yours be done’.
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

A good coach INSISTS on proper foundations! February 14, 2007

I am now coaching a JC tennis team. As I was working on their serves, I realise that most of them are holding their grips wrongly. And I questioned them on whether their previous coaches taught them the right way to hold, they said yes. But along the way, the coach did not isist on it, and allowed them to hold the improper “lazy” way. Well, by the time they come under me for coaching, they have already reached their max potential and still find difficulty in having a consistent serve. To take them to the next level, they have to unlearn what their habit and start all over again.
As I was training them, I was saying to myself “I wish their previous coaches INSISTED on them holding the grip the proper way for service”.
Lesson learnt: As a good coach, insist on proper foundations. That is why when I coach beginners, I INSIST on them having proper foundations. I only have ONE trainee now, but I always insist that she holds the service grip properly.
Application: As a spiritual coach, are you INSISTING on proper foundations in your trainees?
What is a good foundation in a person’s spiritual game? Reading the Word of God for themselves!!
It may be tough at the beginning, just like it takes a long time to learn a serve.
It may be uncomfortable in the beginning, just like holding the right grip.
But it will allow you to go far in future!!!

One of the rituals that I am starting for myself is to read the word of God every Sunday at Bukit Merah hawker from 830-930am, before eating kaya loti…:) Yesterday, I started my discipline. And after that, I went to pray. It was POWERFUL!!!
Reading tells me HOW IT SHOULD BE – what I must DO, how things should be looked at, how I should feel etc.
And prayer gives me the POWER for “how it should be”…
Try it!!! Its amazing!!!
Come Build an Altar of Grateful Memory! February 12, 2007

Genesis 35, 27-28
35:1 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”… Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
When he was fleeing from his brother, Esau, the Lord gave him the Abrahamic covenant.
28:10-17 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. When he reached a certain place… There above it stood the LORD, and he said: “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”… He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
Jacob set his heart to remember this place. This is an awesome place where God reveal His reality and His presence.
28:18-22 Early the next morning Jacob:a. took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar andb. poured oil on top of it. c. called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.d. made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
Jacob made a covenant with God that if what God promised him will come true, then truly will Jacob wholeheartedly follow his Lord. Reflection:
· God indeed is faithful to Jacob.
· Jacob remembered God’s faithfulness.
· When Jacob built an altar at Bethel, sweet memories of God’s help and hope came bubbling in his mind.
· Are there any Bethels you need to go back to and remember God’s faithfulness
· Are you grateful for what has done for you?
· Come, build an Altar of Grateful Memory!
